De release van Splinter Cell Coniviction en Red Steel 2 is uitgesteld naar het eerste kwartaal van 2010. Ubisoft maakte dit gisteren bekend bij de aankondiging van de kwartaalcijfers van het huidige Fiscal Year. In dit kwartaal daalde de omzet van €169 miljoen vorig jaar naar €83 miljoen in hetzelfde kwartaal dit jaar.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot geeft als belangrijkste oorzaak van deze daling de teruglopende verkopen van DS games, back catalog PS3 en Xbox 360 games en de wereldwijde economische crisis. Guillemot geeft ook een verklaring voor het uitstel van de release van Splinter Cell Conviction en Red Steel 2:

Red Steel 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction are going to greatly benefit from the additional polishing time we are providing and will clearly be among the leading brands on the Wii and 360 for the March quarter.

The changes on Splinter Cell and Red Steel – it’s just a question of polish. The team was asking that they couldn’t be with the level of quality on all the maps and all the game for the end of the year, so they had asked for more time to be able to come with a better product, for both of those games. The quality of the games is there for what you’ve been able to see at E3, but we were not able to have that same quality on the full game of those two products.

Omdat beide games niet meer in de Kerst-periode verschijnen, is het aannemelijk dat de verkopen lager zullen uitvallen. Volgens Guillemot zullen de games tot 1 miljoen stuks minder kunnen verkopen in de eerste maand, maar zal dit op de langere termijn worden ingehaald omdat de games van betere kwaliteit zullen zijn:

[...] those two products, it’s around a million units” of lost sales in the first month. [...] We really think with the level of quality that we’ll be able to obtain with the time we give them we will have a long shelf life for those products. Now, because [Conviction and Red Steel 2] are launching during that quarter, they will not do as many units for the first month as they would have done in November/December, but we think that on the long-term they can achieve more units than what they would’ve done.

Volgens Guillemot is het voor Microsoft geen probleem dat Splinter Cell Conviction later verschijnt en geven zij de game nog alle support. Toch is het een grote Xbox 360 exclusive die nu ontbreekt deze Kerst. De PS3 heeft met Uncharted 2 wel een klapper, al is het nog de vraag of die game het qua verkopen echt zo goed gaat doen.

Enerzijds dus jammer dat er wederom twee potentiële toppers worden uitgesteld. Anderzijds zal dit de kwaliteit van de games wel ten goede komen. Het uitstel hoeft daarnaast ook niet te betekenen dat de games pas in maart 2010 zullen verschijnen. Januari of februari is ook goed mogelijk.

We zullen het dit jaar dus moeten doen met games als FIFA 2010, PES 2010, Brütal Legend, Shadow Complex, Assassin’s Creed II, Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 2, Forza 3, Halo: ODST en New Super Mario Bros. Genoeg toppers voor 2009 dus en een shitload een monstergames die in 2010 nog gaan verschijnen.
