Deze week ligt Metro 2033 officieel in de winkels. Inmiddels stromen reviews van de game ook binnen, dus is het de hoogste tijd voor een Metro 2033 review explosie! We hebben al vaker geschreven over deze veelbelovende survival/horror shooter met RPG elementen, gebaseerd op de Russische auteur Dmitry Glukhovsky. Hoe beoordeelt de pers deze game? Hieronder een overzicht met de eerste reviews en de scores die de game heeft binnengehaald.

We trappen af met de Metro 2033 review van Game Informer, waarin de game uitstekend wordt beoordeeld en als eindcijfer een 9/10 krijgt. Uit de conclusie van de review:

Metro 2033’s greatest success is the consistency of its pacing. You’re constantly encountering new factions, discovering interesting new locations, or being tasked to do something you haven’t done before. With this stellar first effort, 4A Games has handily risen above its team’s past efforts in terms of approachability and fun, if not innovation. Metro 2033 is almost certainly destined to be a cult hit. If you enjoy single-player shooters, you owe it to yourself to get in on the (below-) ground floor.

Ook Xbox World 360 Magazine UK is onder de indruk van de game en geeft de game een 9/10 als score. Een citaat uit de review:

The chief issue, though, is one we’ve already mentioned: the shooting – and it’s this black mark which stops Metro 2033 from challenging the absolute best FPS titles on the 360. But it’s a problem you soon learn to forgive, and by the time you’re a few levels in, the iffy fighting hardly harms the other features at all. Besides, it’s something 4A Games can work on during the sequel’s development. The Metro 2034 book is already out, and THQ simply have to order another game as soon as they possibly can. Because while the wait for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Half-Life 3 on 360 continues, Metro 2033 is the only real alternative. And, if PC shooters are your thing, what an alternative it will turn out to be.

We gaan verder met de review van Eurogamer, waarin Metro 2033 wordt beoordeeld met een 8/10. Wat vindt Eurogamer van de game?

Metro 2033 is far busier and far more accomplished than I expected it to be, and it’s also one of the best-looking games – at least in a few very special scenes – on the Xbox 360. Combine these technical achievements with a game that has been carefully written, and lavishly imagined, and you start to get close to a sort of negative image of BioShock. While everything in Rapture is lurid and fantastical, here there is only grit, and blood, and suffocation. Whether that’s what you’re looking for, well, that’s up to you.

IGN UK is iets minder positief en beoordeelt de game met een 7.5/10. Zij zijn van mening dat de game meer potentie had dan uiteindelijk is waargemaakt:

There’s no doubt that Metro 2033 will attract a strong following among those who take the time to explore its nuances, but it’s a game that never quite lives up to its obvious potential. Despite delivering malevolent intensity in spades, its eccentric blend of stealth, survival horror and flawed gunplay is simply lacking the all-important polish required to challenge the genre’s A-list.

Metro 2033′s strength lies in the ideas which underpin its action — without them, it’s just another gritty first-person shooter with some interesting tweaks built in — and it’s unfortunate that the rich source material didn’t mesh with the actual gameplay to form a cohesive whole. It’s also a shame that the book isn’t available in an English translation yet because I think the best way to experience Metro 2033 the game is to read Metro 2033 the novel first. That way, you won’t feel so detached from the world, and you can fill in the narrative holes with the knowledge gleaned from the book. But if you do choose to let the game be your first introduction to the world of Metro 2033 then you’ll no doubt feel like I felt: a little lost, a little confused, and a little disappointed.

Momenteel heeft Metro 2033 op Metacritic een gemiddelde score van 82%, waarmee de game over de gehele linie wel sterk wordt beoordeeld. Geen slechte prestatie van 4A Games. Laten we hopen dat de game een nog sterker vervolg krijgt en dat ook het boek wordt vertaald naar Engels, zodat we de wereld van Metro 2033 beter kunnen snappen.
