Vanaf morgen is de Xbox Live Arcade game Limbo te downloaden via Xbox Live Marketplace. Inmiddels is ook al een groot aantal reviews verschenen van deze bijzondere puzzel-platform game in het zwart-wit, dus is het tijd voor een Limbo review explosie! Hieronder een overzicht met Limbo reviews en de scores die de game ontvangt van de gamepers.

De eerste Limbo review waar we mee starten is die van Joystiq, waarin de game 5/5 sterren ontvangt. Een quote uit de review:

The actual meaning of Limbo, I think, lies in the journey itself. In that sense, it reminds me most of Out of This World or the original Prince of Persia, in that it truly takes you to another place, puts you in another person’s shoes. Dark, disturbing, yet eerily beautiful, Limbo is a world that deserves to be explored.

Ook Giant Bomb is zeer te spreken over Limbo en deelt eveneens 5/5 sterren uit. Waarom is de game zo goed volgens de review?

Limbo has a transportive quality that’s hard to articulate. It so expertly realizes both its internal gameplay logic and its prevailing aesthetic that it almost creates a sort of reverie as you play, fully removing you from your physical environment and plopping you into this cold, mesmerizing other land. Though you’ll find it’s a tough place to survive, it might also be one you’re in no hurry to leave behind. The game is a masterpiece.

We gaan verder met de review van Games Radar, waarin Limbo wordt beoordeeld met een dikke 10 en wederom perfect scoort. Uit de conclusie van de review:

If you like clever game design, intelligent horror, or well-realised artistry, you really have to play through Limbo. It’s an immaculate production, as close to perfect as it gets, and it will stay with you for a very long time.

Ook GamePro is positief over Limbo en beoordeelt de game met 4.5 uit 5 sterren, omgerekend dus een 9/10. GamePro concludeert in de review:

LIMBO has been on our radar ever since we first got a glimpse of PlayDead Studio’s strange, colorless world, and everytime we were given a demo or shown a new level, our interest grew. Now that the game is finally here, we’re happy to see that it lives up to its immense potential. We wouldn’t dare bring up the “are games art” discussion here, because we don’t want to obscure the impact that LIMBO can have, but we will say this: no matter which side of the divide you stand on, there is no denying that LIMBO is one of the most memorable titles you will ever experience.

Eurogamer is kritisch over Limbo, maar kan uiteindelijk de charmes van de game niet weerstaan en deelt een 9/10 uit:

Limbo feels like it’s above those familiar genre gadgets, and for most of its three-hour playing time, it avoids them. The factory is a dissonant exception. To be sure, the game is engrossing to the finish, and it builds to a beautifully understated ending. [...] That’s Limbo: a game that has very few humans, but a surplus of humanity.

Ook IGN is zeer positief over de game en beoordeelt Limbo met een 9/10. Uit de conclusie:

Limbo is an incredible achievement. Very few games are as original, atmospheric, and consistently brilliant as Limbo. It belongs in everybody’s collection. The journey may be over too quickly, but you will be entertained every minute. This is one of my favorite games ever.

Tot slot de review van 1UP, waarin Limbo voor de verandering iets lager scoort met een B als score, wat omgerekend neerkomt op 7.5/10. Wat heeft 1UP over Limbo te zeggen?

Limbo proves in its opening moments that it can tell volumes without using any words at all. But the disparate pieces of this otherwise intricately crafted puzzle never form a cohesive whole. Still, while it stumbles to pull everything together, Limbo is short and certainly worth experiencing, if for nothing else, than to see this beautiful, two-tone world yourself.
