De Apple iPad release is een feit en inmiddels staat ook een groot aantal iPad reviews online, dus is het de hoogste tijd voor een iPad review explosie! De iPad is sinds de aankondiging door Apple begin dit jaar vrij kritisch ontvangen, maar dit was te verwachten, want hoge bomen vangen veel wind. Wat vindt de pers uiteindelijk van de iPad? Dat lees je in het overzicht met reviews en scores hieronder.

Laten we maar gelijk beginnen met de meest uitgebreide iPad review: die van Ars Technica. Deze review telt maar liefst 18 pagina’s en bevat meer dan 20.000 woorden. Als je tijd teveel hebt en graag veel tekst leest, is het dus een aanrader om de gehele review op je gemak door te lezen. Hieronder volgt een samenvatting van de conclusie:

[...] can the iPad replace a netbook or a laptop? For some of you hardcore users, probably not. For those who use netbooks as a lightweight way to browse the Web, chat a bit, and do some light work: yes, it can. Does the iPad make a good weekending/vacationing computer? Sure. The way the iPad is designed, you are less likely to get sucked into doing work or accidentally wasting away hours of your life online than you would on a “normal” computer, but it’s mostly capable enough so that you can do some work when necessary. Is the iPad easy and foolproof enough for your technologically challenged family member? Yes, if that person has at least $500 to burn. Does it make a good e-book reader? Depends on your definition of “good.” Readers that use e-ink (such as the Kindle) may still be better in some situations, but for gadget consolidation’s sake, the iPad as an e-reader is decent enough, even for those of us with sensitive eyes.

The best way for us to sum up our collective and unanimous conclusion on the iPad, is to say that it’s the first device to substantially deliver on the promise made by the iPhone and, in some respects, the Newton. Both of these earlier Apple products gave us glimpses at what a real, usable, purpose-built tablet computer might one day look like, and the iPad at long last gives us the complete picture. So in a sense, the iPad is both the end of a long journey and the start of a new one. We can’t wait to see where it takes us next.

We gaan verder met de iPad review van Tech Radar, waarin de iPad wordt beoordeeld met 4/5 sterren. De conclusie van de review luidt als volgt:

Portable computing – truly portable computing; effortlessly portable computing – is a simple concept, but don’t underestimate what it has to offer. The iPad just plain kicks ass for some very specific activities that have become key to our digital lifestyles.

De volgende review is die van Telegraph.co.uk, waarin de iPad eveneens wordt beoordeeld met 4/5 sterren. Zij concluderen in de review het volgende:

The iPad is a lovely device that gadget fans will lust after, but I’m yet to be entirely convinced that it offers enough of an advantage over my smartphone or laptop. I do think it has the potential to be a game-changing device, but it will be the second- and third-generation versions that really drive the agenda, and introduce a new and innovative way of computing. [...] Ultimately, the iPad is a large iPod touch: a great device to draw your inspiration from, but perhaps not the seismic shift in technology that we were expecting. But watch this space…

Ook IGN heeft een review van de iPad gepubliceerd. Zij beoordelen het apparaat met een 8.0 als eindcijfer en sluiten zich aan qua oordeel bij de voorgaande reviews:

The iPad is the start of a potentially brilliant product, but it just simply hasn’t reached that point yet. The iPad has a few obvious shortcomings that will undoubtedly be improved upon with future iterations, including cost, and with that knowledge the expense is hard to justify for anyone other than passionate early adopters.

Een erg interessante iPad review is die van Ubergizmo. Zij beoordelen de iPad puntsgewijs en geven per onderdeel een beknopte samenvatting in de titel. Ubergizmo concludeert aan het einde van de review het volgende:

Let’s be real: most people currently don’t *need* an iPad in the way they do “need” a phone or a computer. Right now, it is an entertainment device that could make one’s computing life a little better if you find the right apps. It has a lot of great qualities: Über-portable, pretty, responsive, tons of apps, great display, excellent battery life… But it also costs $499 in its simplest form, and this is not pocket change. If you can afford it, and if your usage model is compatible with its design, the iPad is a great device. Love it or hate it, but let’s all live in peace.

De review van Slashdot mag niet ontbreken in dit overzicht. Deze review is vrij droog, maar de conclusie is alsnog interessant, kritisch en duidelijk:

So, what does Apple need to fix?

• Lose several ounces. PLEASE.
• Video Camera
• iChat
• User switching (or at least an Anonymous mode)

I used it for a day and a half and think that it will be an excellent couch companion PC. I’m also certain that on planes, long car rides, and vacations it will be a great little machine. The battery life is pretty dang amazing. But this is a 1.0 piece of hardware running 3.0 software. The size/shape is great. The speed is wonderful. And 2 years of Moore’s law might make this a device to be reckoned with if Apple sells enough of them to continue heavy development on the software and hardware. This version isn’t a replacement PC for anyone yet, but future versions might be. You probably want to save your cash until then.

We sluiten af met de iPad review van Engadget. De review is behoorlijk uitgebreid en de iPad wordt op diverse punten geanalyseerd en beoordeeld. Engadget sluit de review af met de volgende woorden:

So the verdict? The buyer of an iPad is one of two people, the first is someone who sees not just the present, but the potential of a product like the iPad… and believes in and is excited about that potential. This is also a person who can afford what amounts to a luxury item. The second is an individual who simply doesn’t need to get that much work done, and would prefer their computing experience to be easier, faster, and simpler. Does that sound like anyone you know?

De rode draad die door de meeste reviews loopt, is dat de iPad nog lang niet perfect is en op dit moment nog niet interessant genoeg is voor iedereen. Een aantrekkelijk apparaat die door Apple fans en de meer casual gebruikers nu al kunnen en zullen worden gekocht, maar ook een device met onbenut potentieel die in de toekomst alleen maar beter kan worden en dan pas echt een grote massa kan aanspreken. De kans is in ieder geval zeer groot dat de iPad het begin vormt van een gloednieuw tijdperk waarin we media wederom op vernieuwende manieren zullen consumeren en delen.
