The streamlined, focused structure eliminates potential tedium without dumbing anything down, and the battle system strikes an elegant balance between strategy and fast-paced action. Stunningly beautiful graphics and a pervasively meticulous level of polish throughout only add to the experience.

A good story is of paramountal importance in a role-playing game, but the fact that FF XIII’s other elements compensate for its disappointing narrative is a testament  to the overall quality of the experience. For years, gamers have had visions of this title as an industry-transforming epiphany, but no game could possibly live up to such astronomical expectations. That’s no reason to lose faith; though reality doesn’t match the myth, Final Fantasy XIII is a phenomenal RPG destined to be remembered as a technical milestone for the series.

Final Fantasy XIII isn’t just a game you merely enjoy. You fall in love with it. It’s gorgeous worlds have you stopping to admire them in complete awe, while a graceful soundtrack massages your brain (despite the unfortunate replacement of the original Japanese theme with a song from Leona Lewis). That along with the lovable characters and their desperate plight, and the brilliant ATB system come together to form an enchanting 60-hour quest.

This is the real deal. Final Fantasy XIII makes the hours pass like minutes – a testament to the way the game teases you along with one incentive or another at just the right time, every time. It’s next generation Final Fantasy, and that’s all you need to know.

In spite of packing the series’ best battle system, in spite of Pixar-level graphics, in spite of an Oscar worthy soundtrack, FFXIII lacks depth. It’s sad to have to say that about a game that is superlative in so many ways. Strip away all of the amazing visuals and music and you have a 7, 7.5 game that scrapes by on the virtues of its combat.

[...] the lack of anything substantial to do beyond fleeing and fighting soon brings the game crashing back to earth, and even when the walls are lifted Final Fantasy XIII’s world can seem strangely lifeless. As a technical feat the game is a triumph, but it seems a slave to its own spectacle, manacling the gameplay to serve its own bombastic vision and ultimately while the excellent combat and stunning visuals are enough to recommend it, they’re not enough to earn it a place amongst the series’ top rank.

Final Fantasy XIII’s is a superb system overall, easily making up what depth it has lost in speed, tactical cunning and moment-to-moment engagement. Some have bemoaned the apparent retreat from XII’s daring reinvention – I did myself, at first – but in its way XIII is just as big a step for the party RPG, albeit a simpler and perhaps more palatable one.

Still, FFXIII is a landmark game if only by virtue of its production. Square Enix has raised the bar not simply for JRPGs, but all seventh generation games to come. It’s a must-own for series fans and a must-see for just about everyone else. Here’s hoping for some meaty DLC or a stronger showing from Versus XIII.

A game that never comes together properly. However, some aspects of the game and its battle system are so good that it’s still engaging and fun to play…most of the time. [...] Looks the part, but we’d hoped for more variety in its 60-hour sweep.
